Ziricote (Cordia Dodecandra)

Description:
The brownish-yellow sapwood is clearly demarcated from the heartwood, which is red-brown with irregular wavy dark streaks. The dark markings can run at an angle to the main axis of the tree, giving an interesting and attractive pattern. It usually has straight or interlocked grain, a medium texture and a medium lustre.

Typical dry weight: 41-53 lb/ft³ (650-850 kg/m³), but can be heavier.

Specific gravity:  .65-.85

Properties:
Ziricote is a hard, dense wood with good bending strength. It works well with hand and machine tools, and saws, planes, moulds, turns, carves, mortises, bores and glues well. It sands and nails very well, and can be brought to a very smooth finish and a high polish.

Seasoning:
The wood is slow-drying and fairly difficult to season. It has a tendency to surface-check and develop end splits. It is stable in use.

Durability:
Ziricote is moderately durable and resistant to decay fungi and wood-destroying organisms.

Typical Uses:
Because of its decorative qualities, ziricote is particularly prized for fine furniture and cabinetmaking, small decorative articles, turnery, panelling, and as a face veneer on plywood. It is also used for boatbuilding, kitchen cabinets, office furniture, rifle butts and flooring.
